Transformation of India's para-sports praised by WPA chief, Paul dubs country "ideal host" for World Para Athletics Championships
India to Host First World Para Athletics Championships in 2025
India is set to make history as it hosts the first-ever World Para Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi from September 27 to October 5, 2025. The prestigious tournament will bring together over 2,200 athletes and support staff from 104 countries to compete in 184 medal events, 13 more than the last edition in Kobe.
The IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships aims to celebrate the skill, determination, and indomitable spirit of India's para-athletes. The event will elevate India's standing on the global sports map and accelerate the Paralympic movement within the country.
The Parasar Bharati has been announced as the Official Broadcast Partner of the championship, ensuring that the world's top athletes will have a chance to showcase their talents to a wide audience. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has also been designated as the official distribution partner for the event.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium has undergone significant upgrades to deliver world-class facilities for Para athletes. A new Mondo track, the same company responsible for the surface used at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, has been laid. The stadium has also been equipped with a Para-friendly gym, accessibility-focused renovations, and two new long jump pits, one for Para athletes.
World Para Athletics head Paul Fitzgerald believes the championship will captivate the Indian audience and inspire them to watch, participate, and fuel the nation's passion for Para sports. He stated that choosing India to host this event is significant due to the nation's growth in Para sports over the past decade.
The growth of Para athletics in India is evident in the increase in the number of medals won at international competitions. India's best-ever performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics was with 19 medals, five gold, eight silver, and six bronze. India's most successful Paralympic haul in history was at Paris 2024, with 29 medals, seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze.
Hosting major tournaments like the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships is an investment in upgrading the country's sports culture and infrastructure, according to Fitzgerald. The championship will inspire the next generation to dream bigger and reach higher, leaving a lasting legacy for Para athletics in India.
The event will also provide the world's top athletes a chance to experience India's renowned warmth and hospitality. The championship will build on the growing enthusiasm for Para sports across the country, increase visibility, engage the audience, and contribute to the promotion of inclusivity and boosting the growing support and viewership for Para athletics.
