Transformation of India's Agricultural Systems by CII Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (FACE)
CII FACE, the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in India's agrifood sector, is making significant strides in promoting innovation, fostering partnerships, and enhancing farmer livelihoods.
Established with a vision to advance excellence in India's agrifood systems, CII FACE has been instrumental in shaping policies that support the long-term growth of the sector. Through its policy advocacy work, it has influenced government policies to foster a conducive environment for the agrifood industry.
One of CII FACE's key initiatives is the Network of Agri-Startups, Venture Financiers, and Incubators (NAVI). This platform provides a platform for agripreneurs to pitch, present, and promote their ideas, fostering a vibrant ecosystem for agri-entrepreneurship in India.
CII FACE's strategic focus is on improving on-farm and off-farm productivity. To achieve this, it offers a wide array of services that span the entire agrifood value chain. This includes research and policy advocacy, capacity building, technical and science-based interventions, and promoting best practices and innovation.
Under its capacity-building initiatives, CII FACE has trained over 35,000 participants from 6,500 food business operators. These training programs cover farm practices, food safety, and cold chain logistics, equipping participants with the necessary skills to improve productivity and food safety.
In the area of food safety, CII FACE has established the Resource Centre for Health Supplements and Nutraceuticals (ReCHaN). This initiative brings together manufacturers, businesses, consumers, regulators, and other stakeholders to cultivate a robust food safety culture. ReCHaN also promotes food safety and quality, ensuring that consumers have access to healthier food choices.
CII FACE's work in the area of cold chain logistics is spearheaded by the Cold Chain & Logistics Resource Center (CCLRC). The CCLRC focuses on developing integrated cold chain networks across India, aiming to reduce food loss, maximize energy efficiency, and optimize time and cost within cold chain logistics.
To support farmer livelihoods, CII FACE has the Business Support Unit for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). This unit strengthens FPOs by enhancing their capabilities, building scale, and improving access to advanced technologies. Over the years, CII FACE has empowered over 5,000 women farmers through its Dairy Investment Accelerator (DIA) program.
In 2023, CII FACE introduced the FPO Excellence Awards, recognizing and promoting best practices within the agrifood industry. These awards serve as a platform to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of FPOs and inspire others to strive for excellence.
Under the One Health Support Unit (OHSU) initiative, CII FACE has trained over 346 community members, 125 A-HELP workers, and 83 health professionals on animal health. The program has also vaccinated over 26,728 animals, contributing to the overall health and well-being of livestock in India.
CII FACE also encourages technology adoption and innovation by facilitating partnerships between innovators and food business operators. This approach fosters a culture of innovation, driving progress and growth in the agrifood sector.
In conclusion, CII FACE is a leading force in advancing excellence in India's agrifood systems. Through its various initiatives, it is making significant strides in promoting innovation, fostering partnerships, and enhancing farmer livelihoods, shaping a brighter future for India's agrifood sector.
