Transformation in North East India powered by air infrastructure advancements
The North Eastern region of India is undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to the development of its airports and the government's initiatives. This transformation is bringing about a socio-economic revolution in the region.
One such initiative is the Krishi Udan scheme launched by the Government of India. This scheme aims to provide seamless, cost-effective, and time-bound air transportation of agricultural produce from hilly areas, tribal regions, and North-East states. The scheme offers a full waiver of various charges, providing a much-needed boost to farmers in the region. As a result, farmers are earning better incomes due to opportunities to sell their agricultural products in markets with higher prices.
The development of airport infrastructure is expected to boost economic growth in the region. Air operations in North East India have seen a 36 percent increase from August 2017 to August 2022, and this growth is set to continue. There are currently 17 operational airports in North East India, with the number almost doubling since 2014.
The UDAN scheme by the Government of India facilitates regional air connectivity among North-East Indian states and other cities. This improved connectivity is attracting more tourists to the region. In fact, the number of tourists visiting North Eastern states has increased significantly in the past few years. In 2022, there were 11.8 million domestic and 100,000 foreign tourists. The number is expected to increase by 25 percent year-on-year in 2025.
The North Eastern region is also benefitting from proper airway access to remote areas and the modernisation of air infrastructure. The development of airport infrastructure has led to income enhancement and socioeconomic development for people from the region.
Investors are also taking notice of the potential in North East India. Entrepreneurs such as Mark Martin, CEO of Martin Consultancy, and industrialists like Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani have pledged significant investments in the region. Adani has pledged INR 1 trillion, while Ambani plans to increase investment from INR 300 billion to INR 750 billion in the coming years.
The region is set to be transformed into a hub of connectivity, trade, and innovation. Three new greenfield airports were built in Arunachal Pradesh, while Sikkim, Nagaland, and Tripura each received one. This infrastructure development is expected to further boost economic growth and attract more tourists.
North East Farm Sales Promotion, for instance, sent organic food items from North East India to Vietnam using the newly started flights. This initiative aims to promote the region, increase farmer income, and boost the local economy.
The growing interest in India's Act East Policy has also put the North Eastern region in policymakers' focus. With improved infrastructure, increased tourism, and investment from major industrialists, the North East is poised for a bright future. The development of North Eastern airports is not just a project; it's a catalyst for change, a testament to India's commitment to the region's growth and development.
