Football enthusiasts cheered as the national team players pedaled into the Adi-Dassler-Stadion on their blue bicycles. In the sizzling summer weather of Herzogenaurach, Julian Nagelsmann initiated the team's first training session for the Nations League final tournament. With 25 players from his squad, the coach ran through practice under a clear, blue sky.

Even though Yann-Aurel Bisseck was yet to join, following his Champions League final match with Inter Milan against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday (21:00 CET, ZDF/DAZN), the crowd's excitement reached a fever pitch.

Ter Stegen in the Spotlight

After a long eight-month hiatus, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen made a triumphant comeback to the DFB squad at that first training session before around 4,000 fans. Following his brutal knee injury, the Barcelona goalkeeper is set to take his place between the posts for Germany in the Nations League semi-final against Portugal in Munich on Wednesday (21:00 CET). And if everything follows his plan, he would also play in the final four days later against the victor of France vs. Spain.

Nagelsmann kicked off the training with game-focused drills, transforming even a casual warm-up into an intense practice.

Anton in the Hot Seat

It was evident in the final run-through that Borussia Dortmund's Waldemar Anton would assume Antonio Rüdiger's vacant spot in the back four. Mainz's Angelo Stiller nominee Jonathan Burkardt had to exit slightly injured. His teammates obliged their fans' requests for autographs and tossed small balls into the crowd.

Enrichment Integration:Ter Stegen's absence from the team was due to a patellar tendon rupture that occurred in September 2023[5]. He has been playing for Barcelona again since making his comeback, demonstrating his excellent physical condition[1]. Despite lacking specific details on his recent training sessions, coach Hansi Flick has commended Ter Stegen's impressive form[2].
