Josaia Raisuqe: A Shining Light on the Rugby Field, Gone Too Soon

Train tragedy claims life of Olympic champion Raisuqe

Say goodbye to Fijian rugby star Josaia Raisuqe, just 30 years old. His French club, Castres Olympique, shared the tragic news. On May 8, 2025, Raisuqe, a silver medalist from the 2024 Olympics, met an untimely end in a traffic accident in southwestern France.

Castres President Pierre-Yves Revol called Raisuqe "a beacon on and off the pitch" and a "cornerstone of the Fijian community within our club." In sympathy, the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR) postponed the match against ASM Clermont Auvergne to May 24. All games that weekend will honor Raisuqe's memory.

Reports suggest that Raisuqe's car collided with a train at a level crossing early on May 8. No other casualties were reported[1]. As a member of Castres since 2021, Raisuqe showed his strength in seven matches this season, with his most recent game being on April 27 against Toulouse[2].

At the 2024 Olympics, he helped the Fijian national team secure a silver medal in 7s rugby, the only Olympic medal Fiji has ever won[4]. Although there's no direct connection between the accident and the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, Raisuqe's untimely death has left the rugby community in mourning ahead of international events.
