Train derails in Jharkhand, causing 20 wagons of goods to come off the tracks, resulting in disruption of services.
In the early hours of Saturday, August 9, 2025, a goods train derailment occurred near Chandil in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharswan district, causing significant disruption on the Chandil-Tatanagar section of South Eastern Railway.
The derailment took place around 4:15 am, with about 21 wagons involved in the incident. Remarkably, no injuries were reported. The accident occurred near Chandil station, between the Pitaki gate and the station itself.
Initial reports suggest that the derailment was a result of a combination of a technical fault and signal failure. One goods train, heading towards Purulia, derailed on the down line, obstructing the up line where another goods train was approaching, leading to a collision and further derailments of wagons. The tracks were damaged over a length of about 200 meters, with some train wheels thrown a considerable distance.
The disruption has led to severe impacts on train services. Numerous express and mail trains, including the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express, Tatanagar-Katihar Express, Tata-Patna Vande Bharat Express, and others, have been cancelled, short-terminated, or diverted.
Train services on both the up and down routes between Chandil and Tatanagar are affected as a result. The 20894 Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat express and the 28181 Tatanagar-Katihar express have been cancelled, while the 28182 Katihar-Tatanagar express has also been affected.
The Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Adra Division, Vikash Kumar, confirmed the derailment to PTI. Restoration work is ongoing with railway authorities working on a war footing to resume train operations as soon as possible.
