Train derails in Baden-Württemberg, causing multiple fatalities

In a devastating turn of events, a regional express train operated by DB Regio BW regions derailed near Riedlingen in the Biberach district of Baden-Württemberg at around 6:10 p.m. yesterday. At least four rescue helicopters were swiftly deployed to the scene.

The disaster appears to have been caused by a landslide onto the tracks following heavy rainfall, leading to the derailment. Extreme heavy rain, with about 50 liters per square meter falling in just one hour, had recently hit the region, causing the rails to be buried by the landslide. A possible connection between the accident and the storm in the region is being investigated.

The accident resulted in three fatalities, and over 20 people were injured. The exact number of severely injured passengers is yet to be confirmed. The Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

Train services between Munderkingen and Sigmaringen have been suspended due to the derailment. Passengers traveling between Ulm and Munderkingen are advised to use SWEG trains operated by Bahn Eisenbahen Verkehrs Nachrichten (EVN) as an alternative.

The regional express train RE 55, operated by DB Regio BW regions on the Donau-Ostalb network, was carrying approximately 100 people at the time of the accident.

Units of the Bavarian Red Cross are supporting the neighboring federal state in managing the aftermath of the disaster. The Reutlingen control center declared a "mass casualty incident." Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) visited the accident site in the evening.

German Railways (DB) announced a press release for the evening regarding the accident. The German Weather Service reported storm-like thunderstorms passing over the region in the early evening, with up to 30 to 40 liters per square meter falling in a short time.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the injured during this difficult time.
