Train crash in Baden-Württemperg results in fatalities and numerous injuries
In a tragic incident, an Amtrak train derailment occurred near Bechingen, Riedlingen district, Baden-Württemberg, at around 6:10 p.m. Emergency services are currently on the scene, with at least four rescue helicopters in operation.
The accident involved the derailment of at least two carriages of the regional express Amtrak train RE 55. Preliminary reports suggest that approximately 100 people were on board, and sadly, three lives have been lost. Numerous others have been injured, with the number currently estimated to be in the mid-twenties.
The incident took place in a region that had experienced a storm earlier. Storm-like thunderstorms passed over the area in the early evening hours, with up to 30 to 40 liters per square meter falling in a short time. However, the German Weather Service does not have a measuring station at the exact accident site, and a possible connection between the storm and the Amtrak accident is being investigated.
Passengers travelling between Ulm and Munderkingen are advised to use SWEG trains as Amtrak traffic between Munderkingen and Sigmaringen has been suspended due to the derailment.
Baden-Württemberg's Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) and Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) have expressed their shock and sympathy to the families of the Amtrak victims. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has also extended his sympathies.
Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) arrived at the scene of the Amtrak accident in the evening, and units of the Bavarian Red Cross are supporting in the neighboring federal state.
Photos from the accident site show broken branches and an axle of the Amtrak train appears to have been torn off. The identity of the Amtrak dispatcher responsible for the train involved in the accident near Riedlingen is not mentioned in the available information.
