Austria: Commuter Train Collides with Truck at Level Crossing, Injuring Several

A severe train crash occurred in Wollsdorf, Austria, on Monday afternoon. At a level crossing in Styria, a truck was struck by a commuter train, resulting in several injuries and significant property damage.

According to the Styrian Police Directorate, a truck driver, aged 36, attempted to drive onto a company's premises bypassing an unguarded level crossing. It appears he missed a red light and collided with the oncoming train. The force of the impact caused the truck's fuel tank to rupture and a subsequent fire, which engulfed both vehicles.

The truck driver, a Nepalese national, managed to escape from the burning wreck. All eight passengers on the train—including the driver and conductor—were also able to exit safely. However, four people were taken to the hospital, and an additional five were treated on-site. In total, 16 people were affected by the incident.

A large contingent of fire departments and rescue services rushed to the scene, requiring temporary closures of the train tracks, accompanying road, and B64. Estimated property damage is in the millions. The level crossing near St. Ruprecht an der Raab, about 30 kilometers northeast of Graz, is notoriously dangerous, with several severe accidents previously reported at the unguarded crossing. Barriers are scheduled to be installed there in November.

Fire chief Leon Christandl told ORF, "We narrowly avoided a tragic catastrophe."
