Train cancellations in Douro region are not accepted or approved
In a recent announcement, Comboios de Portugal (CP) has confirmed that the commercial service on the Douro Line between Marco de Canaveses and Régua will continue without interruption, despite the return of UTD 592 series railcars to Renfe.
The UTD 592 diesel railcars are being returned to Renfe due to contractual usage limits, but CP has assured that no changes to the commercial timetable are planned for this segment of the line. While some trains may be reallocated, CP will ensure that all services are maintained, and none will be cancelled.
Looking ahead, CP is adjusting its rolling stock distribution to accommodate the ongoing electrification of some Portuguese lines and the arrival of new trains. This move will enable diesel units, including those freed by electrification elsewhere, to be reassigned to support the Douro Line services. As a result, improvements in electrification elsewhere in Portugal are indirectly supporting the maintenance and potential enhancement of services on the non-electrified Douro Line segment between Marco de Canaveses and Régua.
At present, there is no information available on any specific infrastructure projects or direct plans for electrification on the Douro Line itself. For now, the ongoing commercial service will continue to use diesel units, supported by fleet reallocations prompted by electrification initiatives elsewhere in the country.
In summary, the regional train service between Marco de Canaveses and Régua on the Douro Line remains stable and operational. The return of the UTD 592 series railcars to Renfe will not result in the cancellation of any trains, and CP has reported no planned changes to commercial service on the Douro Line between Marco de Canaveses and Régua. The reallocation of diesel units may occur on the Douro Line, according to Comboios de Portugal, thanks to the electrification of some lines and the arrival of new trains.
It is important to note that infrastructure projects like the expansions of Lisbon and Porto metros continue (with some delays), but these do not affect the Douro Line. Additionally, tourist trams along the Douro River remain a separate service and are not directly related to the regional train services on the Douro Line itself.

Portugal's Comboios de Portugal (CP) has confirmed that the politics of railway distribution will allow for the continuation of the commercial service on the Douro Line between Marco de Canaveses and Régua, despite the return of UTD 592 series railcars to Renfe due to contractual usage limits. As a result of ongoing electrification proposals and the arrival of new trains in Portugal, CP plans to reallocate diesel units to support the Douro Line services, potentially improving services on this non-electrified segment.
