Railway Woes in Holstein: Cancellations and Delays Ahead

Get ready for potential cancellations and delays on the rails between Kiel and Lübeck this festive season. Only half of the shiny, new battery-powered trains gracing the eastern network of Schleswig-Holstein are currently up and running, as announced by Claus Ruhe Madsen, the CDU's Economics Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, in a recent Kiel press conference. The situation, he warned, does not expect to improve substantially before January 7, 2024.

The lush green landscape of Holstein is set to witness some disruption in its mobility, with numerous trains in the transfer fleet – earmarked as a backup – conspicuously absent. This shortfall in supply has left the industry scrambling, with local transport company Nah.SH and Erixx pooling resources to maintain stability and reliability, especially during peak travel hours.

The source of these strife? The battery-powered trains plying this route hail from none other than Stadler, a reputable manufacturer who had a Schleswig-Holstein order of 55 trains in their bagger. With a vision of a completely diesel-free rail network by 2040, the continent’s rail behemoth, Deutsche Bahn, hoped to be a crucial player in progressive transportation solutions.

Jure Mikolčić, Stadler CEO, pointed out that introducing new technologies, especially complex high-tech products, is inherently accompanied by improvements. Software problems plaguing Stadler’s battery-powered trains are causing a ripple effect, resulting in internal communication disruptions in the train's various components. A revised timetable has been devised to gradually establish the fleet's stability and reliability by February 2024.

The current spoiled set of vehicles in the transfer fleet is partially due to heavy damage and an arduous spare parts situation. The holiday spirit, unfortunately, might not extend to the rail travelers in Holstein, whose Christmas plans might be foiled, as the traveling opportunities become increasingly limited.

Negotiations with Nordbahn for the borrowing of some of their battery-powered trains are underway to help salvage the situation. If successful, these additional vehicles could well be a ray of hope for frustrated travelers looking for solace from the chaos on the Kiel and Lübeck routes.
