Snowy Mess in Bavaria: More Disruptions Ahead for Trains and Flights
The recent weather chaos in Bavaria is causing numerous issues in various sectors, including air traffic and transportation. On Monday, schools remained closed, and both trains and flights were also suspended. The situation is expected to continue, as Deutsche Bahn (DB) anticipates further setbacks in Bavaria until mid-week. Travelers are strongly advised to postpone non-essential journeys until December 6th .
Munich Airport struggled on Monday, with over 540 scheduled flights getting canceled, accounting for more than half of the day's flights . To tackle the snowy problems, aircraft are still being de-iced, and snow-covered areas on the tarmac need clearing . The trains are also being worked on, with heavy snowfall disrupting rail traffic across southern Germany during the first weekend of Advent .
DB revealed that they possess only 13 "railway-owned snow clearing vehicles" in Bavaria, despite the region having an extensive 9800-kilometer track network . DB added that they also have an additional seven light snow clearing vehicles to help with maintenance and clearing tracks.
Since Sunday afternoon, roads have seen improved traffic conditions. However, secondary roads are still covered in extensive snow, making driving more challenging . In Munich alone, the fire department responded to over 785 emergencies during the weekend, including incidents involving pro-railroad incidents, vehicles off the road, and damaged overhead power lines . Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as of yet.
Several schools in Bavaria, such as those in the districts of Starnberg and Mühldorf am Inn, remained closed on Monday due to the heavy snowfall and potential roof damage . In Augsburg, 20 schools were closed temporarily, with distance learning being provided while the snow is cleared from the school roofs. Some schools will undergo inspections once the snow melts and the buildings are checked for structural stability.
The power supply in Bavaria is stable once more, although isolated outages remain possible if trees fall onto power lines . Bayernwerk is currently addressing repairs for the considerable damages that have occurred due to the snow conditions.
