Mechernich Volunteer Fire Department Hones Skills in Intensive Training Day

The Mechernich Volunteer Fire Department recently participated in an intensive training day at the Institute of the Fire Department in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia. The training ground, featuring containers built training houses, additional training facilities, and a training hall, provided excellent opportunities for the firefighters to train under almost real conditions.

On July 26, 2025, fire fighting unit 4 of Mechernich, the largest in the city area and accommodating the most deployment forces, completed the training day. Fire fighting and rescuing people from buildings were the main scenarios practiced during the day. Technical assistance in traffic accidents with trapped persons was also part of the training.

Communication and coordination were crucial for the leaders on site when the entire fire fighting unit 4 was called out. The training focused on cooperation, communication, and coordination between the individual units of the fire fighting unit.

Thirty-two participants from units Eiserfey, Harzheim, Lorbach, Vussem, and Weyer attended the training day to deepen their knowledge and skills. After each scenario, a training debriefing was held with all participants followed by a discussion among the leaders. Strengths were highlighted and areas for improvement were identified during these debriefings, which is an essential part of the training process and cooperation at the unit level.

The training day took place under perfect weather conditions. Despite being exhausted and sweaty, the seven vehicles left for home in the late afternoon, satisfied with the day's achievements. All participants agreed in the final feedback that a training day of this level with the training possibilities in Düren should be repeated and ideally established in the annual training calendar.
