Trail runner Hoka's Mafate 5 received an enthusiastic endorsement, boasting innovative control and stability enhancements for challenging terrains.
The Hoka Mafate 5, the latest addition to the Hoka One One family, is set to hit the shelves on August 1, promising a blend of plush cushioning and responsiveness for those seeking to conquer technical trails.
This new edition, priced at $185, features a unique design that sets it apart from its predecessors. The Mafate 5 boasts a dual-density midsole, a first for the Mafate series, with a flexible plastic forefoot plate incorporating winglets for enhanced stability. This design, known as Rocker Integrity Technology, combines a supercritical EVA foam top layer for bounciness and energy return with a softer EVA bottom layer that absorbs uneven terrain and keeps the shoe tracking forward. The midsole also incorporates a curved MetaRocker plate that promotes a smooth transition and forward momentum throughout the running stride.
To further enhance comfort and protection, the Mafate 5's softer foam is placed closer to the foot, while the firmer foam is situated at the bottom. This reversed configuration compared to typical designs aims to provide a more comfortable ride while maintaining responsiveness. Additionally, the shoe's softer foam is closer to the ground, ensuring a smooth landing on trails.
For those who frequently encounter debris on their runs, the Mafate 5 offers an optional gaiter to provide extra protection. The upper of the Mafate 5 is constructed using a warp knit material with overlays for durability, and it includes an anti-fray treatment for added longevity. The shoe weighs around 8oz (220g) per shoe, making it a lightweight choice for long-distance trail runners, or "mileage chasers."
While Hoka has given the Mafate the carbon plate makeover in a previous release, the Mafate 5 returns to its non-carbon plate variety roots. The Vibram outsole remains in place, providing reliable traction on various surfaces. The Mafate 5 also features 5mm lugs, ideal for navigating muddy days on the trail.
The original Hoka Mafate, released in 2010, put the brand on the map with its thick midsole, rocker geometry, and bright colours. The Mafate Speed 4, released in 2022, is a lighter option due to its jacquard mesh upper and Profly foam, making it best suited for mountain running with its springier feel and aggressive 5mm lugs.
Whether you're a seasoned trail runner or new to the sport, the Hoka Mafate 5 promises to deliver a comfortable and responsive ride on your next adventure. So, lace up and hit the trails with the Mafate 5, available from August 1.
