Tragic Turn for Devaragattu Banni Festival: 2 Dead, 90 Injured
The annual Devaragattu Banni festival in Kurnool, held on Vijay Dashami, turned tragic this year with at least two deaths and 90 injuries during the stick fight event. Despite authorities' efforts to balance tradition and safety, the festival saw a rise in casualties compared to previous years.
The festival, overseen by local village councils and cultural authorities, involves thousands of villagers participating in traditional stick fights while adhering to strict vows of fasting, celibacy, and dietary discipline. This year, authorities deployed nearly 1,000 police officers, 10 drones, and conducted over 32 awareness campaigns to control violent incidents. However, two participants succumbed to severe injuries - one from a head injury and another from a heart attack. Injuries were fewer compared to previous years, but the fatalities have raised concerns. Turmeric was applied to minor wounds during the ceremony.
The Devaragattu Banni festival, despite its tragic turn this year, remains an integral part of the region's cultural heritage. Authorities will need to reassess their safety measures to ensure the festival's continuation while minimizing risks in the future.
