Born in Tura, Meghalaya, into an Assamese Brahmin family deeply rooted in music, Garg's first name was chosen in homage to Zubin Mehta, a globally renowned conductor from India. His father, Mohini Mohon Borthakur, was a magistrate and a lyricist who wrote under the pen name Kapil Thakur. His mother, Ily Borthakur, was a singer.
Garg later adopted 'Garg' as his surname, the title of his Brahmin gotra. He rose to fame with his soulful renditions and became Assam's most influential musical artist. His popularity extended beyond the region, with his rendition of the famous Bollywood number 'Ya Ali' from the movie Gangster earning him widespread acclaim.
Tributes have been pouring in from fans, the Assamese community, and the music industry following Garg's death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, remembering Garg for his rich contribution to music and expressing that he will be remembered for his popular renditions among people across all walks of life.
