Robert Redford, the legendary U.S. actor and director, has passed away at the age of 89 in his home in Utah. According to a statement, he died 'in the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved.'

Redford's spokesperson confirmed his death to the German Press Agency dpa. The statement did not reveal the cause of death.

Born in California in 1936, Redford grew up in humble circumstances and worked his way into the film industry through many detours. He broke through in the 60s with the Western comedy 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.'

Throughout his illustrious career, Redford repeatedly shone as a charming criminal and romantic lover in many films, including 'The Great Gatsby' (1974) and 'Out of Africa.' His last appearance on screen was in 2019 as the villain in the superhero spectacle 'Avengers: Endgame.'

In addition to acting, Redford was also a director and was committed to environmental activism and nature conservation. In 1980, he founded the 'Sundance Institute' in the Rocky Mountains, which today is the largest U.S. film festival for independent productions.

The news of Redford's death has been met with an outpouring of tributes from fellow celebrities. Donald Trump, a former U.S. president, paid tribute to Redford, calling him tremendous and stating that there was 'none better' during a certain period. Meryl Streep, a Hollywood actress, quoted in a statement that 'one of the lions has left us.'

Jane Fonda, another actress, said she couldn't stop crying since hearing about Redford's death. She stated that he was a 'great man, a great actor, and a great friend.' Rosie O'Donnell wrote a tribute to Robert Redford on Instagram, referring to his character Hubbell Gardiner in the film 'The Way We Were.'

Stephen King, a writer, commented that in the 70s and 80s, Redford was part of a new and exciting Hollywood. Piers Morgan, a broadcaster, commented that Redford had what a career, what an actor, and what a sad loss. Marlee Matlin, an actress, called Redford a 'genius.'

Redford was married to German painter Sibylle Szaggars in his second marriage. He was considered one of the greatest screen legends, having won two Oscars.

Redford will be remembered not only for his acting and directing skills but also for his contributions to the film industry and his commitment to environmental activism. His passing marks the end of an era in Hollywood.
