Tragic Mountain Death: Laura Dahlmeier Passes Away
In a tragic turn of events, double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier lost her life while mountaineering in the Karakoram mountains of northern Pakistan on July 28, 2025.
Dahlmeier, a highly experienced and risk-aware mountaineer, was caught in a rockfall around 5,700 meters altitude. Rescue efforts were delayed by the remote and dangerous conditions, and she succumbed to her injuries by July 30, 2025.
Before her mountaineering career, Dahlmeier was a decorated German biathlete. She won two Olympic gold medals and seven world championship titles, including five gold and one silver at the 2017 World Championships in Hochfilzen. Retiring at the age of 25 in 2019, Dahlmeier transitioned to a life of adventure and challenges, pursuing mountaineering full time.
Dahlmeier's love for the outdoors was evident. She stated that she felt at home in the mountains and found the feeling of freedom outdoors in the mountains unique. This passion led her to participate in several challenging expeditions, including climbs of the 7,100-meter Korzhenevskaya Peak in Tajikistan (2023), the 6,200-meter Trango Tower in northern Pakistan (July 2025), and a record-setting ascent of the 6,800-meter Ama Dablam in Nepal in 2024.
Dahlmeier was also an environmental advocate, completing a sports degree at the Technical University of Munich and engaging in environmental protection and sustainability. She condemned mass tourism on Mount Everest and was an active member of the mountain rescue service at home.
The mountaineering community mourns the loss of a brave and accomplished athlete. According to her family, Dahlmeier's "explicit and written wish" was to leave her body on the mountain in such a case.
Dahlmeier's death was a shock to many, as there are no publicly reported previous accidents prior to this fatal incident. However, Dahlmeier was well aware of the risks involved in her chosen sport, and her death serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers of mountaineering.
