Tragic Incident: RSF Responsible for Mass Slaughter of 40 Individuals in Southeastern Sudan

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to wreak havoc across Sudan, with Sennar State, located in eastern Sudan near the Blue Nile, being one of the areas affected by this protracted violence.

The conflict, which started over disputes regarding RSF integration into the SAF and political power struggles following their joint 2021 coup, has now entered its third year. Both forces have consolidated control over different regions, with SAF holding parts including the capital Khartoum and parts of the east and center, while RSF controls large swaths in the west and south.

The fighting in Sennar State has resulted in the displacement of people from their homes, with the town of Singa, the capital of Sudan's southeastern Sennar state, experiencing significant displacement. The RSF raids in the Sennar State have forced many to flee their homes, and reports indicate that the RSF has targeted hospitals in the vicinity with high-precision weapons.

One such attack resulted in a massacre in the Sennar State, claiming the lives of 40 civilians. In a separate incident, the RSF damaged a private hospital in El Fasher's Grand Market. The major hospital in Sinjah, Sennar State's capital, was also converted into a military camp by the RSF.

The conflict has taken a heavy toll on the civilian population, with over 16,000 deaths reported and nearly 10 million people displaced. According to the United Nations, this makes the conflict in Sudan one of the world's greatest displacement and famine crises, with over 25 million people in need of humanitarian aid.

The RSF's declaration of its own rival government on 15 April 2025, aimed at administering RSF-controlled areas, has been rejected by the UN Security Council as a threat to Sudan’s unity, warning it risks further fragmentation and worsening the crisis.

The international community continues to urge ceasefires and inclusive political solutions to end the fighting affecting Sennar and the entire country. The UN Security Council, along with other actors, remains vigilant in their efforts to bring peace to Sudan and alleviate the suffering of its people.
