A somber atmosphere hangs over North Macedonia following the horrific fire at a nightclub in Kocani, a town in the Balkans. On Monday, flags flew at half-mast, a symbol of the 59 souls lost in the early hours of Sunday to the raging inferno at the Pulse nightclub. The subsequent investigations hint at pyrotechnics used during the stage show as the probable culprit, igniting the highly flammable ceiling lining.
More than two dozen individuals, including the club owner, concert promoter, and security personnel, are currently under scrutiny. Notably, a former head of the rescue service and a state secretary in the economics ministry have also been apprehended. The investigation delves into potential cases of corruption and bribery.
President Gordana Siljanovska, in an emotive address on Sunday evening, called for collective action: "Let's join forces. Let's not let anyone compromise safety standards for profit. Nothing is more priceless than the lives of our young generation."
The fire erupted during a performance by the popular local hip-hop duo DNK. The crowd teemed with enthusiastic fans who had gathered to witness the spectacle. In the wake of the fire, the group members tragically lost one of their singers, the guitarist, the drummer, and a backup vocalist, alongside many other victims. Hundreds of panicked attendees rushed for the exits, leading to the deadly stampede that took many lives, as reported by hospital chief Kristina Serafimowska.
