Tragic demise of a remarkable double Olympic champion due to a mountaineering accident involving falling rocks in the Karakoram mountains
German Biathlete Laura Dahlmeier Dies During Mountaineering Expedition
Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and seven-time biathlon world champion, tragically lost her life during a mountaineering expedition on Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range on July 28, 2025. She was 31 years old.
The incident occurred at around 18,700ft (5,699.8m) in the Karakoram mountain range, a vast and treacherous region spanning five countries and 29,789 square miles. Laila Peak, while not one of the biggest mountains in the region, presents significant dangers due to its remoteness and unpredictable weather conditions.
During the expedition, Dahlmeier was struck by falling rocks at approximately 5,700 meters altitude. A distress call was issued by her climbing partner, Marina Eva, prompting a large-scale rescue effort. However, the unforgiving weather conditions and low visibility hampered the rescue efforts, and Dahlmeier was declared dead at the site based on the conditions and witness account.
Dahlmeier was a beloved figure on the biathlon stage. In her career, she won two gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, making her the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit events at the same Games. Additionally, she earned a bronze medal in the individual event there. Apart from her Olympic success, she was a seven-time world champion and won the overall women's biathlon World Cup in the 2017 season.
The International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry described the incident as "deeply shocking for all of us in the Olympic Movement". Triple Olympic luge champion Felix Loch offered a heartfelt tribute to Dahlmeier on his Instagram account, calling her a true role model for the winter sports community. Various tributes have been shared online, expressing gratitude for the impact Dahlmeier had on the lives of many.
In a statement posted to her Instagram, Dahlmeier's family mentioned that she had expressed a wish for no one to risk their lives to recover her body in case of an accident. As of now, the family has not yet made a decision on retrieving Dahlmeier's body.
K2, another mountain in the Karakoram range, is considered one of the world's most dangerous mountains due to its remote location and treacherous underfoot conditions, with a death rate of over 20%. The Karakoram mountain range includes four peaks over 26,000ft and is best known for housing the world's second-tallest mountain, K2.
