Tragedy strikes in Italy as a 19-year-old meets a devastating end in a bike crash - Tragic cycling mishap in Italy claims life of 19-year-old
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the cycling community was left in shock following the tragic accident that claimed the life of 19-year-old Samuele Privitera during the first stage of the 61st Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta - Mont Blanc, an under-23 race held in Aosta, Italy.
The incident occurred in the municipality of Pontey, approximately 35 kilometers from the finish line. Privitera, a promising young cyclist from Imperia, was descending at high speed—estimated at nearly 70 km/h—when he allegedly encountered a bump or uneven road surface, causing him to lose control.
In the ensuing crash, Privitera's helmet came off, resulting in severe head trauma and cardiac arrest. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by the race-following ambulance crew and urgent transportation to Parini Hospital in Aosta, he tragically succumbed to his injuries on the evening of July 16, 2025. Another cyclist was also injured in the accident, sustaining a broken collarbone.
The news of Privitera's death has sent ripples throughout the cycling community. Team owner Axel Merckx, of Hagens Berman Jayco—a development team of Jayco Alula, a WorldTour team currently competing in the Tour de France—expressed deep sorrow, describing Privitera as an irreplaceable young talent with a bright future.
The Hagens Berman Jayco team's website stated, "With a heavy heart, we must share a message no one in our community ever wanted to hear." The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) also expressed its condolences for Privitera's death.
The second stage of the cycling race in northwestern Italy, originally scheduled for today, has been cancelled. The race will resume on Friday, but there will be no official ceremonies during the event. Teams can decide whether to continue or end the race early.
Authorities are currently investigating the precise cause of the accident. Our thoughts are with Privitera's family, friends, and the entire cycling community during this difficult time.
