Plane Crash in San Diego Claims Six Lives, Including Music Agent Dave Shapiro

Six individuals perished in a small plane accident that occurred in a US neighborhood on Thursday. The plane went down in Murphy Canyon, San Diego, California, as reported by investigators on Friday.

Among the casualties was Dave Shapiro, a renowned US music agent, who co-founded Sound Talent Group. The crash also claimed the lives of two unnamed employees of the music agency, as well as Daniel Williams, a former drummer for The Devil Wears Prada band.

The twin-engine Cessna Citation aircraft, on its approach to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, clipped power lines before crashing. Local firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire that resulted from the impact. Although several homes and vehicles were damaged, no one on the ground was killed or seriously injured. Eight people sustained minor injuries.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator, Dan Baker, suggested that the absence of runway lights and a malfunctioning weather alert system might have contributed to the crash. The pilot acknowledged that weather conditions weren't favorable and debated diverting to another airport during his conversation with an air traffic controller, according to a recording by LiveATC.net. It remains unclear whether the pilot was aware of the malfunctioning lights, but the Federal Aviation Administration had posted a notice indicating their non-functionality.

The plane had departed Teterboro, New Jersey, around 11:15 pm local time on Wednesday and made a fuel stop in Kansas before continuing to San Diego. While federal rules do not apply to private planes, the schedule would have been prohibited for an airlines under these regulations.

ASSISTANT FIRE DEPARTMENT chief Dan Eddy reported that the fog was incredibly dense at the time of the crash, making it difficult to see even a few meters ahead. The San Diego Humane Society is currently in the process of recovering lost animals and decontaminating dogs exposed to jet fuel.
