It remains unclear whether the pilot was aware of the malfunctioning lights, but the Federal Aviation Administration had posted a notice indicating their non-functionality.

The plane had departed Teterboro, New Jersey, around 11:15 pm local time on Wednesday and made a fuel stop in Kansas before continuing to San Diego. While federal rules do not apply to private planes, the schedule would have been prohibited for an airlines under these regulations.

ASSISTANT FIRE DEPARTMENT chief Dan Eddy reported that the fog was incredibly dense at the time of the crash, making it difficult to see even a few meters ahead. The San Diego Humane Society is currently in the process of recovering lost animals and decontaminating dogs exposed to jet fuel.
