More details from the Catastrophe
The disaster unfolded on Thursday as Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Ahmedabad en route to London's Gatwick Airport. The aircraft, with more than 41,000 hours of flying time, crashed into a medical college hostel in the Meghaninagar area, causing an immediate and devastating impact. Reports of the crash mentioned at least 29 deaths on the ground, but the death toll eventually surged to at least 270 as additional bodies were recovered from the debris. A British national named Viswash Kumar Ramesh miraculously survived, suffering only a burnt hand, and is expected to be discharged soon.
The investigation into the crash, led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, is ongoing. Reports confirm that Boeing, the plane manufacturer, offered full assistance in the probe, as questions linger over the safety and maintenance of the aircraft. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Boeing CEO have both expressed their condolences, a response mirrored by the broader public's grief and disbelief.
