In the heart of Kishtwar district, Kashmir, a devastating flood and mudslide hit Chasoti town on August 14, 2025, claiming at least 46 lives and leaving over 50 people missing[1][3]. The disaster occurred on a popular pilgrimage route, causing distress among a large number of pilgrims who were present at the time[1][4].

The disaster was triggered by a sudden, intense downpour classified as a cloudburst, defined by the Indian Meteorological Department as heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm in one hour[2]. This weather event often causes destructive floods in mountainous areas during the monsoon season[2].

The floodwaters swept through key areas, including a parking lot, a community kitchen (langar), and a CRPF camp, trapping several people under debris[1]. Rescue efforts involving the Army and local teams are ongoing, though hampered by bad weather and damaged roads[1]. Over 100 to 150 people have been injured and evacuated or are receiving medical assistance[1].

Officials have been tight-lipped about the incident due to not being authorized to speak to the media[1]. The slow information flow from the disaster-stricken area has made reporting difficult[1]. However, television footage from the disaster site shows pilgrims crying in fear as water floods the village[1].

Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of India's federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir, stated that verified information from the disaster-stricken area is coming in slowly[1]. Relief and rescue operations continue in the area, with the Army mobilized to safeguard lives and assist survivors amid difficult conditions[1].
