Tragedy strikes as acclaimed country musician Brett James meets his demise in a catastrophic plane collision, leaving the music industry mourning his loss.
US Singer-Songwriter Brett James Dies in Plane Crash
Brett James, a renowned figure in the country music scene, has tragically passed away in a small plane crash on September 18, 2025. He was 57 years old.
The plane came down near Franklin, North Carolina, and the other two occupants in the aircraft were his wife and his stepdaughter, both of whom also lost their lives in the incident. The plane was registered in Brett James's name.
The news of Brett James's death was announced by the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in a statement on its Facebook page. The organisation had inducted him as a 2020 inductee, recognising his significant contributions to the industry.
Brett James was best known for his work behind the scenes, penning hundreds of country songs for some of the genre's biggest names. His first number one single came in 2001 with Jessica Andrews's Who I Am. This achievement was followed by numerous accolades, including the Academy of Country Music (ACM) single of the year, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) country song of the year, and NSAI song of the year.
One of Brett James's most famous songs is Carrie Underwood's Jesus, Take The Wheel, which won two Grammys in 2007. He also worked with major artists including Billy Ray Cyrus, Kenny Chesney, and Martina McBride.
ASCAP paid tribute to Brett James, describing him as a 'trusted collaborator to country’s greatest names and a true advocate for songwriters'. Country star Sara Evans also expressed her condolences on Instagram, expressing her devastation at his loss and praying for his loved ones.
The US National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the circumstances of the plane crash. Our thoughts are with Brett James's family and friends during this difficult time.
