Tragedy in MIDTOWN: Friends and Relatives Pay Tribute to Julia Hyman as a 'Shining Beacon' after Heartbreaking Demise
Julia Hyman, a 26-year-old associate at Rudin Management Company, tragically lost her life in a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on July 29, 2025. Hyman was a vibrant and talented individual, remembered by her friends and family as a gifted, passionate, and adventurous spirit.
Hyman was a 2020 graduate of Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, where she was described as self-sufficient, fiercely independent, and always capable of learning new things. After graduation, she began working full-time at Rudin Management, the real estate firm owning the building, in early 2024. At the time of her death, she had been working there for nine months.
The shooting resulted in four deaths, including Hyman, an off-duty NYPD officer, a Blackstone senior executive, and a security guard. The gunman, Shane Devon Tamura, mistakenly targeted Hyman's floor instead of the National Football League's New York offices. Hyman was shot by the gunman with an AR-15-style rifle on the 33rd floor, collapsed in a cubicle, and died at the scene.
Rabbi Maurice Salth led Hyman's funeral service, which took place at Central Synagogue in Midtown Manhattan on July 30. He described her as one of the brightest lights in the world, a promising young woman with talent, passion, and adventure. Her funeral was followed by a private burial, and a single night of Shiva was scheduled for Wednesday evening at Temple Emanu-El.
Hyman was remembered by her friends from Cornell as their "DJ, personal chef, sneakerhead, IT department, and the USA women's national team's biggest fan." Her friends from Riverdale recalled her sharp memory for birthdays and her unmatched loyalty. They also described her signature laugh as a "full-body experience with many snorts and squeaks."
Hyman's close relationship with her sister, Alison, was described as both "fierce and gentle, unshakable." Her cousins described her as "quietly confident, strong and authentic." Julia Hyman spent summers at Trip Lake Camp and studied abroad in Hong Kong during her time at Cornell.
Her uncle Rob Pittman painted a portrait of a young woman wise beyond her years, full of energy, and defined by her deep emotional intelligence. He also recalled Hyman's habit of documenting everything, including a one-second-a-day video during her senior year. Julia Hyman was someone who would send an album that somehow understood you after a hard day.
Julia Hyman played lacrosse and captained three varsity sports at Riverdale Country School, where she was awarded the Founders Award. She was remembered as a passionate athlete, someone who could make "mundane school nights" into "core memories." Julia Hyman was also a devoted daughter and sister, and her love and admiration for her sister Alison were evident in a wedding speech she wrote for her.
Officer Didarul Islam's funeral service is set to take place in the Bronx at Parkchester mosque, Jam Masjid, on Thursday. The shooting incident has left a deep sense of sorrow and shock in the community, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all the victims.
Rest in peace, Julia Hyman. Your life was a testament to ambition, self-sufficiency, and independence, and you will be deeply missed.
