Traffic on the Kolyma highway remains blocked due to ongoing snowmelt
Heavy snowfall has caused a persistent risk of avalanches on the federal highway R-504 "Kolyma" in the Republic of Yakutia, Russia. On March 27, 2024, a snow mass slid onto the roadway at km 594, temporarily restricting traffic for all types of vehicles.
To address this issue, the road organization "DÉP-133" dispatched forces from the village of Tepliy Klyuch, Tomponsky District. Nine units of road equipment, including K-700-based bulldozers, snowplows, excavators, and loaders, are currently being used to clear the snow mass and restore traffic.
In an effort to ensure safety, the traffic ban was enforced at 17:00 on March 27. Two traffic police posts have been set up, and signs have been posted and parking areas for vehicles and catering points have been organized in the Tomponsky and Oymyakonsky districts.
Parking areas are available at km 430 in the village of Khandyga, km 507 in the village of Tepliy Klyuch, km 552, km 596, and km 728. In the villages of Kyubeme and Ust-Nera, parking areas and catering points have been organized at km 755 and km 1009, respectively.
During the night of March 27, avalanches occurred on three more sections: km 590+000, km 594+000, and km 594+200. The Federal State Institution "Vilyui Highway Management" urges drivers to refrain from traveling in this direction until traffic is fully restored.
The road construction companies involved in restoring traffic on the FAD "Kolyma" between Tepliy Klyuch and Ust-Nera include regional enterprises such as "Yakutavtodor" and specialized emergency response teams contracted by the Ministry of Transport of the Sakha Republic.
Round-the-clock road equipment duty is organized to ensure quick and efficient clearance of the road. The federal highway R-504 "Kolyma" from the village of Tepliy Klyuch (km 478) to the village of Ust-Nera (km 963) remains closed due to the snow avalanche at km 594 and adverse weather conditions associated with snowfall.
