Waterton Lakes National Park Temporarily Diverts Traffic to Manage Congestion

On August 3, 2025, Waterton Lakes National Park temporarily diverted all incoming vehicles due to reaching its full capacity, causing road congestion and limited parking availability. This measure was implemented to manage traffic congestion for safety reasons and to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

The temporary diversion directed vehicles at the junction of Highways 5 and 6 to continue driving without turning into the park entrance road. The entrance road was temporarily closed to vehicles.

Parks Canada issued a notice about the capacity issue on Sunday afternoon and emphasized that the diversion is a temporary measure taken only when absolutely necessary. The diversion was lifted as soon as conditions allowed.

During peak times, such as the August long weekend, the diversion lasted several hours before being lifted shortly after 4 p.m. on August 3, 2025[1][3].

In case of a public safety incident creating a traffic bottleneck at a key location in Waterton Lakes National Park, Parks Canada may temporarily divert traffic at the park gate to restore safe traffic flow.

Parks Canada's primary traffic management goal in Waterton Lakes National Park is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone while managing congestion. They appreciate the understanding of visitors affected by the temporary diversion and encourage them to plan ahead and arrive early to avoid congestion.

The estimated duration of the diversion is approximately two hours. However, it may vary during peak times. The temporary diversion at the park gate in Waterton Lakes National Park is not a permanent measure but a temporary solution to manage congestion and ensure public safety.
