Traffic Congestions Fuel Talespinners' Inspiration
In the sun-soaked oasis of Palm Springs, the Villa Capri resort is the epitome of a never-ending party, thanks to its freewheeling manager, Duke Diver, played by Morgan Freeman in the comedy 'Just Getting Started'.
The story, penned by writer-director Ron Shelton, takes an unexpected turn when Duke's past catches up with him. Enter ex-military charmer Leo, portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, who checks into the Villa Capri and challenges Duke's status.
Before Morgan Freeman stepped into the role, Tommy Lee Jones was originally slated to play Duke. The casting of Leo, however, proved amusing for the production team, as they found the contrast between the two actors' images humorous.
Rene Russo was cast as Suzie, a corporate number-cruncher and potential romantic interest, after Ron Shelton was reminded of a road rage story she had shared with him. Suzie, much like her actress, has a bit of road rage in her, a result of parts of her life that haven't gone so smoothly.
As the story unfolds during the season of brotherly love, Duke and Leo find themselves vying for bragging rights and Suzie's affections. However, when Duke's life is threatened, Duke and Leo are forced to set aside their rivalry and work together to save the Villa Capri.
'Just Getting Started' offers an entertaining perspective on an active life during retirement, a concept that producer Steve Richards believes will resonate with audiences. Producer Bill Gerber was instrumental in the development of the film, working closely with Shelton to bring this lively tale to the big screen.
Ron Shelton, known for his snappy dialogue and memorable characters, finds human behavior fascinating, stimulating, and challenging. He loves writing believable relationships, particularly women's characters, as evident in Rene Russo's portrayal of Suzie.
Shelton began his career in the industry penning screenplays, including the political drama 'Under Fire'. His early work laid the foundation for his unique storytelling style, which is showcased in 'Just Getting Started'.
In the latter part of the movie, Duke and Leo, who barely know each other, are forced to work together, a dynamic that is highlighted by Shelton's writing. The film serves as an eye-opener for younger audiences, showing that their parents are hipper and crazier than they thought.
'Just Getting Started' is a testament to the chemistry that can be created when bringing together talented actors like Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones. The film is a must-watch for those seeking a dose of laughter, suspense, and a glimpse into the wild lives of the characters, particularly those in their 20s, during the '60s, the craziest time of all.
