Anticipating Over 100 Vintage Sailing Vessels at The Hansa Sail Event - Traditional sailors are anticipated to exceed 100 at the upcoming Hanse Sail event
The Hanse Sail, one of the world's largest gatherings of windjammers and traditional sailboats, is set to return to Rostock and Warnemünde, Germany, from August 7 to 10. This annual maritime festival is a significant event showcasing traditional sailing ships, maritime culture, and public engagement in maritime heritage.
This year, the event is set to feature over 90 traditional sailboats, with the French traditional sailboat, boasting 22 sails and a length of 58 meters, making its first appearance. The French vessel, though not the largest in the fleet, is undeniably one of the most impressive, promising a sight to behold for spectators.
While the exact schedule and highlights for the 2021 Hanse Sail are not yet available, the festival is known for its grand sailing events, public celebrations, and accompanying cultural programs. Music, food stalls, and maritime-themed activities are usually part of the festivities, with around 200 artists performing on 20 stages on land.
Unfortunately, the German Navy's sail training ship, the "Gorch Fock," will not be present at this year's Hanse Sail. However, sailing opportunities are still available for those interested. Sailing tours with live music and catering are offered, and over 16,000 visitors have already booked trips on ships sailing out to the Baltic Sea near Warnemünde.
Organizers expect a fleet of 110 large and small ships and boats at the Hanse Sail, with the "Belem," a 129-year-old ship, serving as the flagship. The smallest traditional ship this year is the 'Den Ruyghenhill' at 18 meters in length, while the largest is the 'Gulden Leeuw' at 69.90 meters.
Last year's Hanse Sail attracted nearly 500,000 visitors, marking the highest number in recent years. With the event's reputation for offering a memorable experience, it is expected that this year's Hanse Sail will be no exception.
For those planning to attend, it is recommended to check the official event archives or maritime event resources for the most up-to-date information on the 2021 Hanse Sail programming.
The Commission, assisted by the Member States, shall prepare the annual report for the dramatic return of the Hanse Sail, noting the inclusion of various sports events alongside the traditional maritime festival. With the participation of talented athletes on ships sailing out to the Baltic Sea near Warnemünde, this year's Hanse Sail promises to offer an unforgettable blend of sports and maritime heritage.
