Traditional Confectionery Companies Bounce Back in Saxony-Anhalt

After a rough patch that saw a few traditional confectionery companies in Saxony-Anhalt teetering on the brink of extinction, a breath of fresh air is now blowing through the region. "Getting involved here was the right decision," says Frank Ostendorf, the new owner of Salzwedeler Baumkuchen GmbH. Ostendorf, an entrepreneur from northern Germany who had previously managed various bakery factories, took over the Baumkuchen factory in the summer. The former managing director had announced that she would no longer be able to continue running the company due to age-related reasons. Finding a suitable successor had proven to be a challenge that lasted for many years, leaving only 17 out of the initial 100 employees in the summer.

However, under Ostendorf's leadership, the company has made a remarkable comeback. The workforce has now doubled again, and many long-term employees - whose expertise is invaluable for maintaining Salzwedeler Baumkuchen's rich tradition - have returned to the company. Ostendorf is thrilled with the team and has even cited instances where they worked seven days straight in order to meet rising demands.

The primary driving force behind the revival of the Baumkuchen giant was a short yet powerful video that went viral on TikTok, showing how to cut a Baumkuchen correctly. This twelve-second clip now boasts nearly ten million views on the social media platform, leading to a 20% increase in total Baumkuchen sales.

With revitalized spirits and newfound momentum, Ostendorf has wasted no time in planning for the company's future. He has already ordered the first technical enhancements for the upcoming year, and new recipes and varieties are in the pipeline. In addition, he is planning on investing heavily in advertising to elevate Salzwedeler Baumkuchen to a year-round product, not just a seasonal delight.

Following suit, Bodeta in Oschersleben, another prominent confectionery manufacturer in Saxony-Anhalt, achieved a remarkable turnaround last year. In the form of Ascom, a chewing gum manufacturer based in Baden-Württemberg, the company found a new investor at the beginning of the year, and they promptly reported a record high turnover in their more than 100-year history.

The turbulent times experienced by FAM in Magdeburg are not an exception. In 2022, the conveyor system manufacturer filed for insolvency before eventually being taken over by Beumer, a mechanical engineering company based in North Rhine-Westphalia. Latin America Managing Director Sergio Zamorano has pointed out the importance of energy efficiency as a major challenge in the industry, which lagged behind by approximately 20 years due to its traditional mentality.

However, amidst the seemingly endless stream of job cut announcements related to FAM, there have been bright spots as well. IG Metall, the trade union, and the company have agreed on a phased approach to the collective wage agreement for the metal and electrical industry. Furthermore, FAM has once again started recruiting potential employees, indicating that the company's rising fortunes are by no means a temporary phenomenon.
