New Year's Eve in Berlin: A Call for Professional Fireworks Events
According to Benjamin Jendro, the spokesperson for Berlin's police union, organized fireworks events could be the future for the city, including iconic locations like the Brandenburg Gate. This view comes on the heels of incidents involving unregulated pyrotechnics, as was witnessed in Berlin-Neukölln last New Year's Eve and in past years.
Jendro's sentiments stem from the dangers associated with unregulated fireworks, which have contributed to instances of violence in certain districts. As such, the Berlin police are considering imposing bans on fireworks, starting at the beginning of Sonnenallee from Hermannplatz and in some side streets, in the district of Neukölln. Previously, fireworks bans had been implemented in Schöneberg and on Alexanderplatz.
The Berlin Senate, led by Interior Senator Iris Spranger, is actively preparing measures to prevent violence during New Year's Eve celebrations. Spranger briefed the interior politicians of all parliamentary groups in the Berlin House of Representatives on these preparations.
