Getting Loosical from London to Halle: The Unconventional Musical by Tobias Künzel

Halle, Leipzig – Tobias Künzel, the 60-year-old Prince singer, has taken his latest musical "Death On The Throne - The Loosical" on a captivating journey from the streets of London to Halle. This puppet-fueled, live-band driven, quirky extravaganza premiered in London, and is now gracing stages in Halle with its German counterpart, "Tod auf dem Throne - Das Klosical."

Künzel collaborated with British co-author Mark Underwood, who he bonded with during rehearsals for another project. The duo's togetherness blossomed over drinks, culminating in the creation of a musical that would make audiences roll with laughter – and the rest, as they say, is history. This conversation happened, you guessed it, after Künzel had just left the loo. "We got to know each other better, hit the pub, and after three beers, we decided that we'd write a musical. I'd just come from the toilet and said: it'll be a Loosical," Künzel shares.

A Staged Version of History's Greatest Misfits

The unique title wasn't the only offbeat aspect of the musical. In "Tod auf dem Throne," Künzel and Underwood haven't shied away from including an eccentric blend of historical figures we love to hate – or at least, remember quite vividly. Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, Elvis Presley, and Erich Honecker are among the varied cast, performing alongside two courageous actors, four versatile puppeteers, and an exceptional live band.

The Evolution of a Title

English much like a smooth jazz melody, music for the ears. In comparison, German often comes across as a scratchy waltz, according to Künzel. "The English version sounds finer, more melodious. But the German version has its own charm with a few jokes that the English one doesn't," Künzel admitted. "And when Mark comes to see the premiere, he'll be amazed at the audience's laughter."

Consuming history and singing about it seems to be Künzel's forte, as "Das Klosical" is his sixth work in the genre. With a co-author and an abstract concept such as "it'll be a Loosical," the duo's journey into creating a musical far from the beaten track was set in motion, and provided a refreshing contrast to the usual historical narratives.

The musical "Tod auf dem Throne - Das Klosical," created by Tobias Künzel and Mark Underwood, showcases an entertaining blend of historical figures in an unconventional way, incorporating music to make audiences laugh during the performance. The duo's collaboration and decision to create this musical took place over drinks after Künzel had just left the bathroom, with Künzel referring to it as a "Loosical."
