Step Into the Action: Predator: Badlands Preview

Here's a sneak peek at Predator: Badlands, the latest addition to the Predator series. Buckle up as the alien antagonist takes center stage, battling foes on an alien planet unlike any other seen before.

In an exclusive interview with BloodyDisgusting, director Dan Trachtenberg shared some fascinating insights about the film's plot and its main character. Dek, portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, is an outcast coming from Yautja Prime. He's on a quest for the ultimate battle, hoping the deadly planet Kalisk will prove his worth.

Taking a cue from Prey, Trachtenberg aims to treat Dek and his people with utmost reverence, just like Elvish in Lord of the Rings or Dothraki in Game of Thrones. The Yautja language, painstakingly crafted by a student of Paul Frommer, helps avoid turning the story into a lore-focused jaunt.

This new Predator film, as stated by Trachtenberg, isn’t just an inversion of the usual plot, where the Predator is on another planet and has to use all his cunning to survive. Badlands is strongly genre-specific with a particular purpose, unlike its predecessors.

Thia, an android from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, played by Elle Fanning, is a crucial factor in Dek's journey. Her character arc mirrors his but takes a different turn as she strives to prove herself. Trachtenberg cites influences such as Frank Frazetta and Mad Max 2 but credits Team Ico's Shadow of the Colossus as the primary inspiration for the duo.

Elaborating on Thia’s character, Trachtenberg hints at her bringing a physical element to the table beyond her technical skills. However, he remains tight-lipped about specifics. The collaboration between Dek and Thia might seem like a big, bold move, but Trachtenberg believes it's one that could resonate with audiences.

If you're eager to catch Predator: Badlands, mark your calendars for November 7. And if you’re more of a classic Predator fan, you can revisit the previous five films. For details on Trachtenberg's visual approach and the Dex creation process, check out our previous article here.
