Towngas to Provide Green Methanol for Sustainable Fueling to Golden Island in Singapore's Bunkering Activities

The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has made a significant stride in the green energy sector by entering into a supply agreement with Singapore-based bunker supplier Golden Island Pte Ltd. This partnership will see Towngas supplying ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS-certified green methanol to Golden Island, marking a milestone in the expansion of Towngas's green methanol supply network in Asia.

Under this agreement, Towngas delivered 5,000 metric tonnes of green methanol to Golden Island’s Singapore-flagged bunker tanker, Golden Antares, for use in Singapore’s bunkering operations.

Validating Green Fuel Commitments

This collaboration serves as a testament to Towngas's ability to reliably execute green fuel commitments across borders. It demonstrates precision in green methanol logistics and supply chain management, including storage at Tianjin Vopak’s facility and transfer to the Singapore bunker vessel.

Advancing Green Maritime Fuel Adoption

The agreement also marks a significant step forward in advancing green maritime fuel adoption, particularly in Singapore, a key global bunkering hub. By supplying green methanol, Towngas is helping to expand its influence and network in the regional shipping fuel market.

Supporting Decarbonisation Efforts

The supplied green methanol offers Carbon Intensity savings of more than 75% compared to conventional Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), aligning with Asia’s increasing push for sustainable shipping fuels. This collaboration supports the decarbonisation of the shipping industry, a critical step towards achieving carbon neutrality in the sector.

A Strategic Milestone for Towngas

According to Mr. Sham Man-fai, Towngas's COO of Green Fuels & Chemicals, this collaboration not only confirms their strategic investment in green fuel production but also accelerates their business momentum across the region. It reinforces Towngas’s commitment to developing low-carbon solutions for the shipping industry's decarbonisation.

Expanding Green Methanol Footprint

Towngas continues to expand its green methanol footprint through various strategic collaborations and supply agreements. The company's Ordos plant, located in Inner Mongolia, currently has an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes, which is expected to increase to 150,000 tonnes by the end of 2025.

The initial annual production capacity of the Foshan production plant is expected to reach 200,000 tonnes by 2028. Towngas, along with Foran Energy Group Company Limited, also plans to raise RMB10 billion to establish multiple green methanol production bases across China, with the aim for a combined annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes from these production bases.

In addition, Towngas has signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore-based Global Energy Trading Pte Ltd in January 2025 to jointly advance the supply and distribution of green methanol as a marine fuel.

The bunkering operations will comply with Singapore's recently published Technical Reference (TR) 129 on Methanol Bunkering, ensuring safe and efficient operations.

In summary, the agreement with Golden Island acts as a concrete demonstration project and logistical framework that underpins Towngas’s broader strategy to scale its green methanol supply across Asia, leveraging Singapore as a key entry point for regional bunkering expansion and environmental impact reduction.

In this strategic collaboration, Towngas is not only demonstrating its precision in green methanol logistics and supply chain management, but also advancing the adoption of green maritime fuels, especially in Singapore, a significant global bunkering hub.

By supplying green methanol, Towngas is expanding its influence and network in the regional shipping fuel market, aligning with Asia's increasing push for sustainable shipping fuels and supporting the decarbonisation of the shipping industry.
