Get ready to vote once more, Sylt inhabitants! The battle for who'll helm the municipality as its new mayor is heating up with a runoff election on Sunday. Two formidable contenders, Tina Haltermann and Markus Gieppner, are squaring off.

A grand total of 12,107 eligible voters [1] have their chance to cast their votes at one of nine polling stations. The polls will close at 6:00 PM sharp, according to municipal representatives. During the initial election three weeks back, neither candidate managed to secure the necessary absolute majority.

Tina Haltermann, an independent backed by the CDU, currently leads the race with a commanding 38.4% [2] of votes in her pocket. Markus Gieppner, a local hero and software developer, stands close behind with 23.5%. Initially, the race had six hopefuls, two of whom were women.

The ousting of former mayor, Nikolas Häckel, paved the way for this runoff election. In September 2024, the people voted him out under a cloud of controversy [3]. Following his removal, Häckel tragically passed away in Hamburg under mysterious circumstances.

In his absence, Carsten Kerkamm of the CDU is currently presiding over Sylt, a municipality consisting of seven districts - Westerland, Tinnum, Archsum, Keitum, Morsum, Munkmarsch, and Rantum.
