Tournament Interruption: Coco Gauff Advances Due to Rain, Alexander Zverev and Jessica Pegula Delayed Progression at Cincinnati Open
In the ongoing 2022 Cincinnati Open, the tournament has witnessed its fair share of weather-related disruptions, causing some unexpected twists and turns.
Jessica Pegula, aiming to emulate Simona Halep's feat of reaching six consecutive rounds of 16 since 2009, faced a setback in her match against Magda Linette. The Pegula vs. Linette encounter was suspended during the deciding final set, with Linette leading 6-7(4) 6-3 5-6 when play was halted due to extreme weather conditions. Upon resumption, Linette went on to win the match, ending Pegula's run at the tournament.
Pegula's next opponent was scheduled to be Magda Linette after she defeated Kimberly Birrell in the second round. Linette advanced further by beating Pegula in the rain-interrupted match.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev, who boasts a 4-0 head-to-head record against Brandon Nakashima, also had to wait for the completion of his match due to washouts. At the time of suspension, Zverev was leading Nakashima 6-4 5-4. The matches between Zverev and Nakashima, and Ben Shelton and Roberto Bautista Agut will resume on Wednesday.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Jasmine Paolini had a tough encounter with Ashlyn Krueger. The first set was decided by a tie-break, with Krueger taking the lead. However, the second set was more serene for Paolini, who won the match with a score of 7-6 (7-2) 6-1. Paolini's next opponent is Barbora Krejcikova.
Coco Gauff received a walkover into the last 16 of the Cincinnati Open, while Dayana Yastremska withdrew from her match against Gauff due to illness. Gauff will face Lucia Bronzetti in the next round.
Noteworthy performances include Lucia Bronzetti's victory over Jelena Ostapenko, and the Cincinnati Open's status as a WTA 1000 tournament since 2009.
The Cincinnati Open continues to face challenges from the unpredictable weather, but the competition remains intense and exciting. Stay tuned for further updates.
