Tournament Continues Despite Absence of Medal for Weber Due to Infection
German Javelin Thrower Julian Weber Falls Short at World Championships
Julian Weber, the 31-year-old German javelin thrower, failed to secure a medal at the recently concluded World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Weber, who was bedridden for a week due to an infection, struggled throughout the competition and couldn't come close to his season's best.
Despite his early struggles, Weber had expressed confidence in his ability to win more medals and improve further. His coach, Burkhard Looks, advised him to relax, sit down, and focus on involving his legs in the throw, but his advice didn't help. In the final, Weber fell short of his qualification distance of 86.67 meters, finishing fourth for the fourth consecutive time in major events, including the World Championships in Tokyo, Eugene in 2022, Budapest in 2023, and the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.
However, the German team still managed to secure three silvers after six days of the World Championships. Imke Onnen and Christina Honsel, both German high jumpers, qualified for the final of the World Championships. Honsel's qualification was particularly impressive, considering it was her first appearance at the World Championships.
In the javelin throw event, Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago clinched the gold medal with a distance of 88.16 meters. Anderson Peters from Grenada finished second, while Curtis Thompson from the USA took third place.
Meanwhile, Leyanis Pérez Hernández from Cuba won the women's triple jump event with a distance of 14.94 meters. Caroline Joyeux, the German triple jumper, finished tenth in her World Championship final debut, achieving 14.00 meters.
Despite Weber's disappointing performance, his coach, Looks, had earlier described his early performances as "just arm throwing". Weber, who hasn't won a medal at any global event to date, will undoubtedly be looking to bounce back and improve in future competitions.
In a brighter note for German athletics, Looks' advice seemed to have worked for some athletes. The German Athletics Federation now has three silvers from the World Championships, a promising sign for the future of German athletics.
