In the heart of the Bahamas, Celebration Key, a new exclusive destination operated by Carnival Cruise Line, has been the centre of attention lately. The island, which officially opened on July 19, 2025, has been shrouded in a sombre mood following two tragic drowning incidents that occurred on August 15, 2025.

Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed the drownings of two separate guests, expressing their condolences and stating that their lifeguards and medical team responded to the emergencies. The cruise line is cooperating with local authorities as investigations proceed.

The incidents occurred at two different locations on the island - one in the lagoon and one at the beach. The victims were a 74-year-old woman, who died while swimming in a pool, and a 79-year-old man who was snorkeling at the beach.

Autopsies are being performed by the Royal Bahamas Police Force to determine the precise causes of death. Initial findings suggest drowning, but investigations aim to examine all contributing factors.

Industry experts, including maritime attorney Peter Walsh, have highlighted potential systemic safety failures at Celebration Key, such as lifeguard staffing adequacy, emergency response, and safety infrastructure. They are calling for urgent reforms and enhanced accountability from Carnival.

The $600-million destination features a 10-story sandcastle, two racing waterslides, a shopping village, a basketball court, and an adults-only retreat. It is expected to bring more than two million guests a year, with the number growing to four million by 2028. The adjacent cruise pier can accommodate two of Carnival's largest ships simultaneously.

The economic impact for Grand Bahama is substantial, with hundreds of long-term jobs created by daily operations at Celebration Key. Despite the recent tragedies, the destination continues to attract tourists, with many enjoying the amenities it offers.

In a separate incident, the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater aircrew rescued a family of three off the coast of the Bahamas on June 30, 2025. The Paradise Plaza is located at Carnival Cruise Line's Celebration Key, adding to the array of facilities available for visitors.

As investigations continue, Carnival Cruise Line remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its guests. Updates on the progress of the investigations and any changes in safety protocols will be communicated as they become available.
