Tourist plummets from the Dolomites during Italian holiday
In the heart of the Dolomites mountain range, south of Cortina, lies the Bosconero group, home to several peaks over 2,000 meters high, including the highest, Sasso de Bosconero at 2,468 meters. Tragically, this picturesque region became the site of an incident last week.
On August 26, 2025, a German hiker fell approximately 80 meters off a high trail in the Bosconero group. The exact cause of the fall remains unspecified. The hiker's companion, another German, alerted the rescue team in the afternoon.
Despite all efforts by the mountain rescue service, the hiker could not be saved. The authorities have not yet disclosed the victim's age or place of origin, but it has been confirmed that the deceased was a 62-year-old man from the district of Kelheim in Lower Bavaria, Germany.
The incident occurred near Cortina d'Ampezzo, a town that will host the Winter Olympics next year. The region's stunning beauty and challenging terrains attract numerous hikers and climbers from around the world, making incidents like these a rare but unfortunate occurrence.
The authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the exact circumstances leading to the hiker's death. As the investigation continues, the hiking community and locals alike are left to mourn the loss of a fellow adventurer in the Italian Alps.
