Hamburg Sees a Boom in Tourist Arrivals and Overnight Stays in January

- Tourist numbers soar in Hamburg during January

So, Hamburg welcomed more visitors in January than in the same time last year. The statistical office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein has the scoop - a whopping 13% rise in guests, amounting to 488,000 tourists! And let's not forget the increase in overnight stays, climbing by 6.9% to 976,000.

Most of these overnight stays were booked by German tourists, jumping up by 8.1% to a massive 790,000. There was also a 2.2% rise in stays by overseas travelers, equating to 186,000. The average stay? A succinct 2.0 days.

17.1% of visitors hailed from abroad, with Denmark, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the Arab Gulf states, Switzerland, and the USA being the most common origins.

Wondering what may be causing this surge in Hamburg tourism?

Well, domestic tourism has been a significant driving force across Germany. It appears that a growing number of Germans are swapping international voyages for local getaways, and Hamburg doesn't seem to be an exception to this rule.

Hamburg's thriving cultural scene is a major draw, with household names such as the Hamburg DOM fair, Miniatur Wunderland, and the Elbphilharmonie pulling in visitors. A strong business sector, coupled with aggressive post-pandemic recovery efforts, could also fuel the increased tourism numbers.

If you're eager to dive deeper into why Hamburg has been so popular among travelers recently, be sure to reach out to the Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein for details tailored specifically to this boom in January.
