The Bear's Trespass: Poenari Fortress Temporarily Closed
Y'all, we got some wild news from Arges County!
Poenari Fortress, fondly known as Vlad the Impaler's Digs and a beloved tourist magnet, has had to slam its gates for a bit, y'all. On Monday, April 28, a damn bear rammed through the electric fence and invaded the tourist area, sending the county officials into a spin (no pun intended).
This fortress of ours welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually—and just opened its doors again on April 14, following a two-year hiatus for conservation and restoration works. According to News.ro, these works started last summer and wrapped up last year, with a final inspection happening earlier this spring.
Given the high population of bears loitering about, the authorities had whipped up an electric fence (get it? sparks fly?) around the fortress and the access road as a safety precaution. But even that wasn't enough to deter Mr. Bear.
So, to keep humans safe from bear hugs, the decision was made to close the fortress, with visits being allowed only once the area is secured. The county council made the announcement on their socials.
Local authorities, including the Prefect's Office, are now on the case, tackling the grizzly situation.
Now, some clarification here: according to our research, the fortress actually reopened in April 2025, not 2023 (whoops!). The bear sow technically broke the news this April, requiring a temporary shutdown.
Just remember, these fortress walls have stood since the 13th century, so a little bear is no match for our history! Stay tuned for more updates.
