Tourism undertaking of colossal scale by MV experiences temporary halt, pushing back completion timeline
The Pütnitz peninsula, situated directly on the Saaler Bodden, has been the site of ongoing munition clearance work since autumn 2022. So far, mainly remnants from World War II have been unearthed during this process.
The development of the Amber Holiday Resort, a much-anticipated project, has been a subject of interest, yet public sources have not provided clear details about the reasons for the delay, current progress, or expected opening date.
The project, involving a 250-hectare area on Pütnitz and total investments of around 350 million euros, is the brainchild of the leisure park operator Center Parcs. Supreme GmbH (Rostock) aims to create a sports and adventure world named "Pangea Island" as part of the resort.
The city of Ribnitz-Damgarten is the owner of the area, which was used as a military airport since 1935. After 1945, the Soviet Army took over the site. The last combat aircraft unit of the West Group of the Russian Armed Forces left the military airport in 1994.
Despite the delays, progress has been made. By the end of 2024, around ten million euros from the Joint Task "Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure" have been paid out. The munition clearance is already well advanced after two clearance periods.
The remediation work for old pollution is scheduled to begin in October 2025, after the end of the vegetation period. The building plan for the Amber Holiday Resort is expected to be legally valid by the end of 2026 at the earliest.
Center Parcs expects the opening of the holiday and leisure park to take place within 36 months after the building plan is legally valid, which would be by the end of 2029 at the latest according to the current planning status.
It's worth noting that the Amber Holiday Resort development is utilizing only a quarter of the granted funds. Around 33.2 million euros of the GRW funds, extended until June 30, 2027, have not yet been paid out.
For the most precise and updated details, we recommend checking official Amber Holiday Resort announcements or visiting their website directly. Local tourism boards or resort management can also provide valuable information. Recent news or press releases specifically mentioning Amber Holiday Resort development are another useful resource.
Sports facilities are being planned as part of the Pangea Island section of the Amber Holiday Resort, a project spearheaded by Center Parcs. The opening of the sports-themed area, along with the rest of the resort, is expected to take place within 36 months after the building plan is legally valid, which could be by the end of 2029 at the latest according to the current planning status.
