The tourism sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is aiming to boost its reputation within the local community. The industry association plans to introduce suggestions at the State Tourism Day, starting Thursday (2 pm) in Rostock. Feedback has been gathered through public meetings, resulting in a proposed ten-point action plan. This initiative isn't just about boosting tourism but also significantly improving the residents' quality of life.
The plan aims to make tourism development more transparent and participatory. It envisions providing better employment opportunities for workers in restaurants, hotels, and recreational facilities. Recent surveys indicate a less than favorable perception of the tourism sector among the country's population. Nevertheless, this sector remains a significant economic pillar, employing around 160,000 people directly or indirectly in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
To elevate the tourism industry's image and contribute to the region's economic policy, the following approaches can be taken:
- Emphasize Local Culture and History: Showcase the region's rich cultural heritage and historical sites through events, guided tours, and festivals.
- Promote Natural Attractions: Highlight Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's natural beauty, including lakes, forests, and coastal areas.
- Enhance Accessibility and Inclusivity: Improve accessibility by focusing on barrier-free accommodations, restaurants, and trails, following the lead of Saxon Switzerland Tourism Association.
- Support Local Businesses: Encourage the growth of local businesses, such as farms and manufacturing firms, to maintain the region's unique character and support the local economy.
- Develop Year-Round Activities: Offer a diverse range of activities throughout the year, including winter adventures like surfing, canoeing, and fishing, to make the region an all-season destination.
- Collaborate with Educational Institutions: Partner with schools and universities to create educational programs and workshops that focus on the region's history, culture, and natural attractions.
- Invest in Marketing and Promotion: Allocate resources to effective marketing and promotion strategies, leveraging digital platforms, social media, and local media to reach a wider audience.
Implementing these strategies can help improve the tourism sector's image among local residents, contribute to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's economic policy, and enhance the overall quality of life in the region.
