Tourism Association MV Back in the Spotlight: Landtag's Economic Committee to Discuss Association's Future
Debate Continues over Tourism Association MV's Matters in State Legislature - Tourism Association MV back in the parliament again
The Landtag's Economic Committee is set to delve into the controversies that nearly sent the Tourism Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) into insolvency, and explore plans for its continuation. Invitations have been extended to the managing board and representatives from the Ministry of Economics for a closed-door "expert discussion." The board includes Landtag President Birgit Hesse, CDU state parliamentarian Wolfgang Waldmueller, hotel manager Alexander Winter, and President of the Tax Advisors' Chamber, Holger Stein.
Critics accuse the ruling parties, SPD and Left, of showing no interest in transparency, after the CDU, Greens, and FDP proposed the formation of a subcommittee to probe the Tourism Association's affairs. They also request access to all relevant state government documents related to the case. However, these motions failed to win a majority in April.
Inspecting questionable funding practices
Operating as an independent entity, the Tourism Association is predominantly state-funded. Financial irregularities paved the way for the Ministry of Economics to halt funding and file a complaint in February. Though details remain scarce, there have been no suggestions of personal enrichment. The insolvency crisis was averted when the association and the ministry agreed upon a future strategy, resulting in the resignation of long-serving association manager Tobias Woitendorf in mid-April. The Schwerin public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the suspected subsidy fraud, with results yet to be disclosed.
Hesse: Forging Ahead
Hesse emphasized the resolution reached at the most recent association meeting, pledging efforts to safeguard the tourism industry in the interest of its employees. "This renewed commitment drives us to collaborate in building future-proof tourism structures that are essential for a state whose identity is rooted in tourism," she declared.
Since Easter, tourism in northeastern Germany has experienced a resurgence and is steadily gaining momentum heading into summer. "Tourism challenges are manifold and the guest expectations escalate. A sustainable tourism structure is needed, one that caters to both supply and demand, fosters a harmonious relationship between guests and residents, and ultimately crafts solutions that propel Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's holiday destination into the future," Hesse warned.
Post-Pandemic Tourism Recovery
Following a steep decline during the Corona pandemic, domestic tourism in MV rebounded swiftly. In 2024, the State Statistical Office reported the second-highest number of guest arrivals and overnight stays since German reunification, with 8.0 million guests and 32.9 million overnight stays. The numbers were only marginally exceeded in the record year of 2019.
