Tadej Pogačar Concedes Defeat to Wout van Aert in Tour de France Finale

Tadej Pogačar, the four-time Tour de France champion, showed remarkable resilience but ultimately conceded defeat to Wout van Aert in the finale of this year's race. The Slovenian cyclist's impressive run came to an end as van Aert clinched the victory in the challenging weather conditions of the final stage.

The gaps for the general classification were set 50 kilometers before the finish in Paris, with Pogačar maintaining his lead. However, the final stage was only relevant for the stage victory, and it was van Aert who emerged triumphant.

Pogačar's Tour de France career has been nothing short of phenomenal. He has won the overall race four times – in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025 – and has consistently dominated the general classification, young rider, and mountain classifications. His 2020 victory was particularly noteworthy, as he won the overall race along with the mountains and young rider classifications, overcoming Primož Roglič in a dramatic time trial on the penultimate stage.

His closest competitors in his Tour victories have included Roglič, who was second in 2020, staying close until the final stages but ultimately losing by 59 seconds after Pogačar's decisive time trial. In 2025, Jonas Vingegaard finished second, about 4 minutes and 24 seconds behind Pogačar, while Florian Lipowitz took third place, trailing by 11 minutes.

Across his Tour de France career, Pogačar has won multiple stages – over 20 Tour stage wins cumulatively by 2025 – and has consistently been a force to reckon with. His podium finishes in his first eight Grand Tours have surpassed the achievements of previous legends in consistency.

Lipowitz, the first German to reach the podium of the Tour de France in 19 years, also had a notable performance. He was awarded the White Jersey as the best young rider in the Tour de France, and finished third in the final stage of the race. Despite his podium finish, he was 11 minutes behind Pogačar in the general classification.

In the end, it was van Aert who emerged victorious, ending Pogačar's four-year reign at the Tour de France. However, Pogačar's legacy as one of the strongest and most consistent grand tour riders of his generation remains unquestioned. With ambitions to match the historical record of five Tour titles, we can expect to see more of Pogačar's dominance in future races.
