Tour de France in 2030 Setting Off from Dresden?
Tour de France 2030: Dresden Vies for Fifth Grand Départ in Germany
The city of Dresden, Germany, is making a bid to host the start of the Tour de France in 2030, joining other cities vying for the prestigious event. This ambition is particularly noteworthy due to its significant connections and unique aspects related to the bid.
The Tour de France has seen more foreign starts since 1954, and Germany has been a part of this trend, serving as a starting point in 1965, 1980, 1987, and most recently in 2017 in Düsseldorf. Now, an initiative has been pushing for several months to bring the Tour de France back to Germany after a 13-year absence, with Dresden as a potential candidate.
French Ambassador François Delattre has expressed his support for this initiative, citing the eastern part of Germany as a region that has produced many great cyclists. He also mentioned the 30th anniversary of German reunification in five years as a significant occasion for a Dresden Grand Départ.
Organizer Christian Prudhomme has expressed hope for a 2030 Tour de France start in Dresden, Germany. He also mentioned applications from the Czech Republic, Slovenia, the Netherlands, and Belgium for the Tour de France, indicating stiff competition for the coveted starting spot.
The competition for the 2030 start in Dresden is expected to be particularly strong, with Norway also expressing interest. Around 300 applications for stage locations are received each year, with 50 from abroad.
Co-initiator Andreas Prokop mentioned good discussions and a 'first meeting' with Prudhomme this year. Ideas for three stages in eastern Germany are being considered, including Dresden to Gera, Leipzig to Halle as a time trial, and Erfurt to Magdeburg.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Grand Départ will start in Barcelona, Spain, with the 2027 Grand Départ set for Edinburgh, Scotland. The Tour de France continues to attract interest from cities around the world, and the race to host the start of the Tour de France in 2030 is no exception.
