Demi Vollering, a prominent cyclist, has been participating in the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. However, her participation in the race has been marred by a heavy crash during Stage 3.
During the 163km stage between La Gacilly and Angers, Vollering was involved in a crash with about 3.7km to go. The incident involved multiple riders, with Vollering being hit at speed and landing hard on her left side. Despite the impact, she was able to remount her bike with the help of her teammates and finished the stage.
Following the crash, Vollering underwent an evaluation for a suspected concussion. Initial assessments by the team doctor revealed multiple contusions but ruled out the need for a hospital visit. Further medical tests, including a second concussion protocol, will be conducted on Tuesday morning. Vollering is awaiting medical clearance to continue in the race.
The crash occurred at a crucial point in the race, with the peloton preparing for a sprint showdown at the end of Stage 3. A four-rider breakaway was caught within the final 8km, but the stage ended up being another sprint finish.
As Stage 4 approaches, Vollering is facing physical challenges. She is experiencing pain in her knee, glutes, and back. The results of these tests will determine if she will start Stage 4, which will traverse 130 kilometres between Saumur and Poitiers. The Côte de Marigny (0.9km at 5.4%) is the only categorised climb in Stage 4, located 29km from the finish.
Despite her injuries, Vollering remains positive and wants to continue in the race. Her team manager, Stephen Delcourt, stated that she is positive and they need more time to decide on her participation.
The Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift continues to captivate audiences with its intense competition and inspiring stories of resilience. Vollering's determination to continue racing despite her injuries serves as a testament to her strength and dedication.
