Remco Evenepoel's Struggles in the 2025 Tour de France

Remco Evenepoel, the reigning time trial world champion, faced a challenging Tour de France in 2025. The Belgian cyclist, wearing the white jersey during the 14th stage, struggled on the climb of the Tourmalet, a brutal Pyrenean ascent that took more than just seconds from him.

Evenepoel's teammates tried to nurse him through the agony, but their efforts were in vain. The cyclist was visibly broken, both physically and mentally. His pedaling was squared, and he was searching for rhythm. Evenepoel's body was worn out, and he was experiencing tension during the early slopes of the Tourmalet.

Despite his struggles, Evenepoel showed a remarkable display of maturity. He left the 2025 Tour de France with maturity, having grown through adversity. Evenepoel considers the day he left the race as one of the rawest and most vulnerable moments of his career.

The physical exhaustion and depletion of energy reserves were not the only challenges Evenepoel faced. Illness took hold of him during the race, causing him to withdraw from the competition. Evenepoel's minutes in the Tour were dwindling, and he was unable to sustain high-power output or respond to attacks.

Evenepoel's struggles were compounded by missing crucial winter training after a crash in December. He collided with the open door of a van during a training ride and sustained significant injuries, including a fractured rib. Evenepoel also sustained injuries during the Belgian National Championships.

Despite these setbacks, Evenepoel left a positive message for young riders. He told them that it's okay to stop, feel tired, and be human, and that sometimes stepping back is the strongest thing you can do. Evenepoel's sports director acknowledged that Evenepoel didn't feel great, had no legs to suffer, and it was wise to stop to recover for future goals like the World Championships in Rwanda.

The 14th stage of the 2025 Tour de France was a humiliating moment for Evenepoel, as he was caught by his two-minute man, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a bike). Evenepoel's head sagged, and his body slumped forward during the stage.

Evenepoel, however, left the 2025 Tour de France with his head held high. He showed resilience and maturity in the face of adversity, and his message to young riders was a testament to his character. Despite the setbacks, Evenepoel remains a force to be reckoned with in the world of cycling.
